Landing in Los Angeles, the sisters were greeted by their husbands
and children at the airport. While waiting on the luggage, Yvonne’s
husband asked her how the trip was to which she responded “We’ll talk at
the house”
“That bad?” asked Phil.
“No, not bad, but right now I’ve got a million thoughts going through my head.”
“We’ll still see y’all at dinner right?” Quincy intervened. “The kids
have school in the morning; I just thought we’d do a little something
before the kids go back to school and we all get busy again.”
“Yeah” Yvonne stated, “but right now I gotta get home and unpack.”
Azalea
chimed in “same here, mine are young so I know I need to go see them”
Once they got their luggage and head back home, Deja told her husband
that their aunt left each of them a scrap book that she made with some
of the memories from their visits to Louisiana. “Jameson also gave me
this cook book full of desserts she used to make; I’ll probably use some
of these for my book.”
“Oh wow” Deja exclaimed “Look at this one, she made the best lemon meringue pie, and you know it’s so hard to find that up here”
“What about the photo album that she left you?” asked Quincy.
“Open it! Where was this at?”
“If I remember correctly, that was in Grand Lake, LA on Calcasieu Lake”
She then asked if the kids were home.
“Well Junior stayed the night last night with his cousin. Andrea and Malachi went to the beach, Caleb’s dad took them.”
Meanwhile, Yvonne and Phil were talking at home while she unpacked. “What’s in the records?” her husband asked.
“Not sure” she responded, “I’ll have to look at them later”
She sat on the side of her bed for a minute or two until her son
Zachariah came in the room to ask a question. He’s about three years
older than Malachi and he’s not nearly as inquisitive. He requested
permission to go to a party Saturday.
“Maybe” Yvonne responded. “Right now, I need you and your sister to get ready to go, we are eating at your aunt Deja’s tonight”
The dinner consisted of baked chicken, green beans, mashed potatoes, a
green salad and peach cobbler prepared by Quincy; Azalea baked a cake as
well as steaks.
Malachi, Zach, and Aundrea were sitting on the porch when they received a
call to go in and eat. After the blessing of the meal, Clarissa started
the conversation by asking if her mother thought about what to do with
the rental property that her sister left her.
“I don’t know” Helen responded “I’ll probably rent it out, I just have
to figure out how I’m going to advertise it, you’re the one with the
technology, you can help me.” “It feels odd; I have not been down there
for at least 20 years. I had always been reluctant to go because of what
happened to me. I don’t really have many connections in the area now;
I’ve been living in Los Angeles for 50+ years now”
“Enough about that” Deja interjected “What about those records she left you with Yvonne?”
“I haven’t looked at them yet, James told me to guard them with my life so they must be important”
Malachi raised his hand so to not interrupt
“Grandma, how did it feel to go down there after so long?”
“Well,
I felt guilty, the area is beautiful, I loved seeing my family again,
however I always regret that I had not had more communication with my
mother”
“Why’d you stay away?”
“Son, I asked the same question” Deja stated
“Let’s not talk about that right now”
They
talked a bit about the trip overall. Yvonne and Clarissa stated talking
about a trip they took to Toledo Bend. They were older in age than the
three younger sisters so Clarissa had begun going down there with Yvonne
once Yvonne turned 8. They had already been in their teens by the time
Deja, Azalea, and Anita began accompanying them.
“Mom what did you get” Malachi asked “I got cookbooks, I probably started cooking desserts when I was about 10 years old”
Anita asked “how come we didn’t get to go there? I’m so jealous!”
“Oh
don’t be, y’all started going to waterparks and stuff, we didn’t start
doing that until y’all started coming down with us, we always camped out
on the river or went fishing”
“Toledo, was certainly fair nicer than Sam Houston Park.”
“Enough talk, we have all that dessert waiting in the kitchen, I’m ready to dive into the cake and that pie!” Anita exclaimed!
After
dessert, they all stayed at Deja’s house for about an hour longer prior
to heading out. Malachi, Aundrea, and Zach went back to the porch.
“I don’t wanna go to school tomorrow!” Zach whined.
“Bro, high school!” exclaimed Malachi
“What do y’all think about this trip? I don’t know about you, but mom has been on this Louisiana kick for the last week!”
“I don’t know any of these people, I’ve looked at pictures, I would never go to those beaches, the water looks disgusting”
“Yea, mom said, you don’t want to swim in the majority of the water in Louisiana”
“Hey man, what are y’all doing Friday?”
“Not sure” Aundrea said
“I figured we could go see a movie or something”
They were interrupted momentarily, “Hey, we need to head out , school in the morning” Yvonne asserted.
“Yea, come on in, y’all both know how hard it is to get the two of you up in the morning!” Deja confirmed.
While
the kids were showering, Deja began looking at the cook book, with the
photo album on the side of her, she noticed a photo of her first
successful pie. Prior to getting up from the kitchen table, she said “If
only Pinterest existed then” prior to getting ready to settle to bed
for the night.
